SPECTAL EMERGENCY EXIT WINDOW

  • Brand SPECTAL

Check against the official notice below — it lists the full affected range.

What happened

Spectal Industries is recalling certain vertical emergency exit windows installed on Blue Bird and Thomas Built school buses manufactured between July 18, 2011, and August 5, 2011. The windows have incorrect rivets holding the handles in place. If the handle is pulled during a non-emergency situation and detaches, the window cannot be re-secured, which could allow children to fall or climb out. However, if the handle detaches during an actual emergency, the window will still open properly for evacuation.

Vehicle manufacturers will notify owners of affected buses. Spectal will provide free repair kits to the manufacturers, and owners can choose to have repairs performed at an authorized dealer, local repair facility, or by themselves at no cost. Owners can contact Spectal at 1-450-378-6722 or their vehicle manufacturer for more information.

Hazard

IF THE HANDLE IS ACTUATED DURING A NON-EMERGENCY SITUATION AND DETACHES, THE EMERGENCY WINDOW CANNOT BE RE-SECURED, POSING A RISK THAT CHILDREN MAY FALL OR CLIMB OUT. HOWEVER, IF THE HANDLE WERE TO DETACH DURING AN EMERGENCY, THE EXIT WINDOW WILL OPEN AND EGRESS THROUGH THE WINDOW WILL NOT BE HINDERED.

What should I do?

OWNER NOTIFICATION WILL BE HANDLED BY THE VEHICLE MANUFACTURERS. SPECTAL WILL PROVIDE REPAIR KITS TO THE VEHICLE MANUFACTURERS, WHO WILL INSTRUCT OWNERS THAT REPAIRS CAN BE PERFORMED, AT THE OWNER'S OPTION, BY AN AUTHORIZED DEALER, BY A LOCAL REPAIR FACILITY, OR BY THE OWNER. REPAIRS WILL BE MADE FREE OF CHARGE. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SPECTAL AT 1-450-378-6722 OR THEIR VEHICLE MANUFACTURER.
