What happened

Toyota is recalling certain 2003-2007 Lexus LX470 vehicles because the steering shaft snap ring may disengage following an unusually severe impact to the front wheels. If the snap ring separates and the steering wheel is repeatedly turned to the locked position afterward, the steering shaft may eventually become disconnected, which could result in loss of steering control and increase the risk of a crash.

Dealers will replace the snap ring with a newly designed one and install an additional component to prevent separation of the steering shaft at no cost to owners. The safety recall began on August 23, 2010. Affected consumers should contact Lexus at 1-800-255-3987.
