Children's clothing (BYK)

Is my product affected?

Children's clothing

  • Brand BYK

Check against the official notice below — it lists the full affected range.

What happened

BYK children's clothing products have been recalled due to the presence of hexavalent chromium at concentrations ranging from 0.6 to 5 mg/kg. This chemical poses a health risk because hexavalent chromium can cause allergic skin reactions such as contact dermatitis. The concern is heightened because the products are intended for children, who may suck on their clothing and could be exposed to the chemical through skin contact, ingestion, or inhalation—all routes that exceed established safety limits.

The affected products include jackets, t-shirts, jumpers, trousers, sweatshirts, shirts, and track suits with various article codes (including G601, J7, J51, J115, J118, J121, J122, J132, 518, 648, 7912, and W904). Authorities have ordered seizure of the products. The source document does not specify what action affected consumers should take.

Hazard

The products pose a chemical risk because they contain hexavalent chromium, in concentrations varying from 0.6 to 5 mg/kg. Oeko Tex Standard 100 states that, to ensure optimum quality, total chromium content should be less than 1 mg/kg for children’s clothing and less than 2 mg/kg for all other clothing, regardless of whether it is in contact with the skin. According to the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR; 2007), chromium VI should actually be below the detection limit due to the substance’s cutaneous sensitisation properties, i.e. its ability to cause allergic reactions such as contact dermatitis. Taking into account that the target population is children who have a tendency to suck on their clothing and that the chromium VI content is above established limit values, we consider that exposure may occur not only via the cutaneous route, but also by the oral and inhalatory route and that the products therefore pose a chemical risk.
