Passenger car – shift cable clip in Suzuki vehicles

  • Brand Suzuki

Check against the official notice below — it lists the full affected range.

What happened

Suzuki is recalling certain Aerio/Liana passenger cars equipped with 1.3 and 1.6 liter gasoline engines and 5-speed manual transmissions that were produced between January 1, 2001 and January 5, 2006 (model years 2002-2006) at the KOSAI factory in Japan. The shift cable clip that attaches the gearshift cable to the gearshift lever has an improper shape that can cause it to contact the gearshift lever housing when excessive lateral force is applied during shifts to first gear. Repeated shifting in this manner may eventually cause the shift cable clip to break.

If the shift cable clip breaks, the gearshift cable can become disconnected from the gearshift control lever, resulting in loss of the ability to change transmission gears. The recall affects vehicles with specific chassis numbers within defined ranges for 5-door and 4-door models with both standard and four-wheel-drive configurations. Suzuki has undertaken voluntary corrective actions to address this issue, though the source does not specify what remedy an affected consumer should pursue.

Hazard

The affected vehicles are equipped with the gasoline engine and 5 speed manual transmission. Due to an improper shape of the shift cable clip that keeps the gearshift cable attached to the gearshift lever, the shift cable clip can contact the gearshift lever housing if excessive lateral force is applied when shifting to first gear. Repeated shifting in this manner can eventually cause the shift cable clip to break. If the shift cable clip breaks, the gearshift cable can become disconnected from gearshift control lever, resulting in loss of the ability to change transmission gears.
