What happened

SAKO is recalling certain TRG-22, TRG-42, and M995 (TRG-S) rifles manufactured between October 1999 and October 2002. The rifles have a defective firing pin that can break and exit toward the shooter when the rifle is fired with a defective cartridge, such as a reloaded round or one with a primer that pierces during detonation. One confirmed incident occurred in Italy and one in Canada, though no accidents have been reported. The broken firing pin piece could cause injury to the shooter, particularly if protective safety glasses are not worn.

The affected rifles come in various calibers including .25-06 Rem, .270 Win, 7mm Rem Mag, .308 Win, .30-06 Sprg, .300 Win Mag, .338 Win Mag, .338 Lapua Mag, and others. The TRG-22 and TRG-42 are sharp shooting rifles with green or black synthetic stocks, while the M995 (TRG-S) is a hunting rifle with a black synthetic stock. The record does not specify what actions an affected consumer should take to address this recall.

Hazard

There is a risk that when the rifle is fired with a defective cartridge – either because it was reloaded or because the cartridge had a primer that pierced upon detonation – the rearward gas escape might cause a broken portion of the firing pin to exit the rear portion of the rifle towards the shooter. No actual accidents happened but one incident was confirmed in Italy and one in Canada. Ejected firing pin may cause injury to the shooter, especially if the shooter is firing the rifle without use of protective safety glasses.
