Selcof brand bicycle seatposts (models SP 46, 48, 54, and 58) pose a serious injury risk because the bolt attaching the seat can snap. The bolt fails when the seat is adjusted without sufficiently loosening it first, which causes wear to the teeth that hold the construction together. This wear creates microscopic gaps that lead to further deterioration, eventually causing the bolt to snap under lateral stress. Incorrect bolt tightening torque and seat position can also accelerate tooth wear. The manufacturer has reported incidents related to this problem.
The affected seatposts were used in multiple bicycle models including Advance, Adventure, Confidence, CityLiner, Forrest, LiteAce, RoadGentlemen, RoadLady, RoadRunner, and TerraLiner, primarily from model years 2001 through 2004. The teeth ensure a so-called closed construction. The bolt's sole function is to hold the whole construction together, and it is subject to a pure tensile stress. The wear creates microscopic gaps, causing the teeth to wear even more, eventually causing the bolt to be subjected to lateral stresses which can cause it to snap. Wear on the teeth can also be caused by an incorrect bolt tightening torque. The position of the seat also affects the nature of the stress imposed.Incidents have been reported.
