What happened

Essential Medical Supply is recalling four models of adult portable bed rails due to a serious entrapment hazard that can cause asphyxiation. When attached to a bed, users can become trapped within the rail or between the rail and mattress. One death has been reported. The recalled models are the Hand Bed Rail (P1410), Hand Bed Rail with Pouch (P1410-P), Hand Bed Rail with Floor Support (P1411), and Hand Bed Rail with Floor Support with Pouch (P1411-P), which have chrome or white metal tubing with black padding and measure approximately 17 to 21 inches high by 20 inches wide.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bed rails. Those who purchased bed rails sold or imported on or after November 1, 2015, are eligible for a pro-rated refund from Essential Medical Supply based on the age of the product. Consumers with older bed rails purchased between October 2006 and October 2015 should stop use, disassemble, and dispose of them to prevent reuse, as no remedy is being offered for these older models. The company name and model number appear on a label located on the grip handle of the bed rails.

Hazard

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bed rails. For consumers who own bed rails sold or imported on or after November 1, 2015, Essential Medical Supply, Inc., will provide a refund. The amount of the refund will be pro-rated based on the age of the bed rail. The company is not offering a remedy for older bed rails. Consumers with older bed rails sold between October 2006 and October 2015 should stop use, disassemble and dispose of the bed rails to prevent reuse.
