Ultra-Low NOx water heaters
Check against the official notice below — it lists the full affected range.
A. O. Smith is recalling 30, 40, and 50 gallon natural or propane gas-fired Ultra-Low NOx water heaters sold primarily in California under multiple brand names including American, A. O. Smith, Kenmore, Reliance, State, U.S. Craftsmaster, and Whirlpool. The recalled units were manufactured between April 8, 2011 and August 1, 2016, and only those with serial numbers between 1115 and 1631 (representing year and week of production) are affected. The water heater's gas burner screen can develop tears, which causes the burner to create excess radiant heat that poses a fire hazard if the unit is installed directly on wood or other combustible flooring.
Consumers can check if their water heater is recalled by locating the serial number on the data plate next to the gas control valve/thermostat and looking it up at www.waterheaterrecall.com. According to the recall notice, affected consumers should immediately turn off and stop using the recalled water heater and contact A. O. Smith to determine if a free repair is necessary.
