MTD Products Inc. is recalling certain log splitters due to a hazard where the control handle may fail to return to neutral position and fail to stop the splitting wedge from moving forward, which could result in amputation of hands and fingers. The recalled models include brands MTD Gold, Troy-Bilt, Yard Machines, Cub Cadet, Craftsman, and MTD, sold in 21-, 25-, 27-, and 33-ton sizes in red, black, and yellow. These log splitters were manufactured between November 2008 and October 2009, with specific serial numbers included in the recall, and were sold at hardware stores, Lowe's, Home Depot, Walmart, Menards, Sears, and independent dealers.
According to the recall notice, affected consumers should immediately stop using their log splitters and contact MTD Products Inc. to determine if their specific unit is included in the recall. The following log splitter brand names and model numbers are included in this recall. They were sold in red, black and yellow in 21-, 25-, 27- and 33-ton models. The model number is located on the frame near the engine. Log splitters manufactured from November 2008 through October 2009 are included in this recall. Only models with certain serial numbers are included in this recall.
