What happened

Kikkerland Designs Inc. is recalling approximately 20,000 novelty lighters distributed nationwide through small retail stores and souvenir shops between March 1997 and February 1999. The lighters, which resemble lamps or flying saucers and sold for about $10, lack child-resistant mechanisms required by law. The flying saucer lighter is made of silver metal and orange plastic, measures about 3.25 inches in diameter and 1.75 inches high, and has "UFO" imprinted on its ignition switch with flashing lights. The lamp lighter has a blue shade, yellow pole, and black base, stands about 6.75 inches high, and uses a pull chain as its ignition switch. Young children could ignite these lighters, creating a fire hazard, though the CPSC and company are unaware of any injuries to date.

Consumers who own these lighters should stop using them immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a full refund. For more information, consumers can contact Kikkerland Designs Inc. at (800) 869-1105 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. EDT Monday through Friday, or call the CPSC Consumer Hotline at (800) 638-2772.
