What happened

Evenflo Co. Inc. is recalling approximately 22,000 Hike 'N Roll child carriers due to a strangulation hazard. Small children can slip sideways into the leg openings of these carriers, creating a potential strangulation risk. The company has received 16 reports of children slipping into the leg openings, some resulting in red marks on the child's neck, though no serious injuries have been reported. The recalled carriers are model numbers 522101 and 522102, manufactured between June 1, 1996, and October 31, 1997. These green and blue or blue and beige carriers can be used as both a backpack carrier and a stroller and were sold nationwide from June 1996 through June 1998 for approximately $65.

Affected consumers should stop using the carriers immediately and call Evenflo at (800) 649-0071 to receive a free seat insert that reduces the size of the leg openings and provides a more secure fit. The model number and manufacturing date can be found on a white tag attached to the bottom of the carrier.
