What happened

Conair Corp. and Sears Roebuck and Co. are recalling approximately 183,000 back massage cushions due to a burn hazard. The motors in these cushions can stall, overheat, and potentially burn through the cushion material. The recalled product is the Sears Health Essentials Back Massaging System with Heat, Model SR4503, which is a black padded cushion measuring approximately 21 inches long and 17 inches wide with a handheld controller displaying "Health Essentials" on the front and "Sears SR4503" on the back. The cushions were sold in Sears stores and catalogs between February 1997 and March 1998 for approximately $30.

While no fires or serious injuries have been reported, the CPSC, Conair, and Sears have received 13 reports of damage to upholstered furniture and bedding, and two reports of minor burns to consumers. Consumers should stop using the back massage cushions immediately and return them to any Sears department store for a full refund. For additional information, consumers can call (800) 456-5010.
