What happened

American Presto Corp. is recalling approximately 720 soldering guns sold under the Wisdom brand name due to a hazard of electrocution, electric shock, and burn injury. The problem is that the plastic handle can melt during use, exposing the electrical components inside. The soldering gun is pistol-shaped and made of red plastic with a metal barrel, labeled "SOLDERING GUN 110V 60 HZ 35W," and has a black power cord attached to the bottom. These units were sold at Northern Hydraulic Co. stores in ten states (Minnesota, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Iowa, Texas, Tennessee, Georgia, Wisconsin, and Virginia) between February 1997 and January 1998 for approximately $4. The CPSC has received one report of a handle melting but no injuries have been reported to date.

Consumers who own these soldering guns should stop using them immediately and return them to American Presto Corp. for a refund. To obtain information about how to return the soldering guns, consumers should call American Presto Corp. collect at (909) 390-5288 between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. PST Monday through Friday.
