What happened

Riteway Products recalled approximately 5,500 Cycle Design Tag-A-Long bicycle trailers sold between July and November 1997 for about $179. The trailers, which came in blue, black, or green and bear the Tag-A-Long logo and "Cycle Design" markings, have defective U-Joints that can break and separate the trailing rider from the towing bicycle, potentially causing the rider to lose control and fall. Six reports of U-Joint bolt hardware failure have been received, resulting in two minor injuries including cuts, scrapes, and bruises.

Consumers should stop using the trailer immediately and contact their local bicycle dealer to request replacement of the U-Joint and accompanying hardware. If the repair cannot be completed, the product should be destroyed or discarded. The recall record notes that Riteway Products is out of business and cannot be contacted directly.
