What happened

Sta-Rite Industries is recalling over 135,000 model 08417 floor inlet fittings that have been installed in gunnite and concrete pools and spas over the past 25 years. The fitting is designed to cover pipes carrying water into pools, but when improperly installed to cover pipes carrying water out of a pool or spa (as an equalizer or suction fitting), a bather's hair can become entangled in the fitting and trap the bather's head underwater. Sta-Rite is aware of two drownings that resulted from hair becoming trapped in this inlet fitting when it was used on an equalizer pipe line.

Consumers with gunnite or concrete pools and spas should check with their pool or spa contractor to determine whether the model 08417 floor inlet fitting is installed in their pool. If the fitting is installed as an equalizer or suction fitting, consumers should call Sta-Rite at (262) 728-5551 to receive a free replacement part.
