What happened

The Americas Company is recalling approximately 42,000 wooden armadillos and turtles made from dried gourds because they contain dangerous levels of lead in their painted surfaces. The toys, which measure between one and four inches long and feature movable heads and tails, were sold nationwide at six retailers including The Nature Company stores from May 1995 through February 1996 for between $4 and $14 each. The products have a "Hecho En Mexico" sticker on the bottom.

Consumers should immediately remove these items from children's reach and return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund or exchange. Alternatively, consumers may return the armadillos and turtles with proof of purchase directly to The Americas Company at 1977 Union Street, San Francisco, California 94123, where the company will exchange them for products that meet safety standards. For more information, consumers can call The Americas Company at (800) ARTIFAX (278-4329) between 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. PT, Monday through Friday.
