Consolidated Stores Corporation is recalling 26,000 mini-hammocks sold at Big Lots and Odd Lots stores in 1990 and 1991. These lightweight nylon mesh hammocks, which measure 7 feet wide by 20 feet long and were priced at $3.99 each, lack spreader bars to hold them open. Without spreader bars, children can become entangled and strangle while getting in or out of the hammocks. Since 1975, the CPSC has received reports of 17 children between ages 5 and 17 who strangled while using mini-hammocks without spreader bars made by various manufacturers, and the agency is aware of one incident involving a child sold a Consolidated hammock who became entangled and suffered brain damage from a near-strangulation.
Consumers who own Consolidated mini-hammocks should stop using them and return them to the Big Lots or Odd Lots store where they were purchased for a full refund. For more information, consumers can call Consolidated Stores at (800) 877-1253, Extension 6807. The CPSC is investigating other mini-hammock manufacturers and importers to determine whether their products present similar entanglement risks.
