What happened

The Consumer Product Safety Commission and seven playground equipment manufacturers are working together to remove heavy metal and molded plastic animal swings from playgrounds nationwide. These swings, installed between 1951 and 1991, have caused serious injuries including two deaths—a 2-year-old in California in 1985 and a 6-year-old in Pennsylvania in 1994—when children were struck in the head. The CPSC has documented 42 additional head injury incidents involving these swings, resulting in injuries such as skull fractures, concussions, brain damage, serious lacerations, and in one case, loss of vision in one eye.

Approximately 10,000 of these 30 to 80-pound swings are believed to have been installed at parks, schools, and daycare centers across the country, though an undetermined number remain in use. The swings are made of cast aluminum or molded plastic and are painted to resemble animals such as horses, zebras, pelicans, ducks, turtles, and seals, or other figures like rockets. If you know of playgrounds with these animal swings, you should contact your local school board or park office and call one of the seven manufacturers directly to request immediate removal of the swings.
