What happened

Ming Ta Supply U.S.A. is recalling its 16-inch Model #1615 Mountain Jr. Bicycle, a sidewalk bicycle sold at K mart stores in March and April 1989. The bicycles lack a chain guard to prevent clothing from catching in the chain, have a seat post that is too long for a sidewalk bicycle, have a handlebar stem with painted-over insertion marks making minimum insertion unclear, and do not come with safety or operation instructions. These defects present a significant risk of injury to young children. Approximately 11,000 bicycles were imported, with 7,900 distributed to K mart and roughly 1,200 sold during the recall period. No injuries have been reported.

Consumers who own these bicycles should bring them to any K mart retail store for reconditioning at no cost. K mart personnel will add a chain guard, replace the handlebar stem and seat post, and provide safety and operating instructions. Bicycles sold after June 1989 have already been reconditioned and are not subject to the recall.
