What happened

Peg Perego U.S.A., Inc. has announced a voluntary repair program for its "Avanti" model stroller in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. In at least 13 reported instances, infants seated in the stroller placed their mouths over a metal wire guide running parallel to the armrest, causing their chins to become caught in the one-inch gap between the wire guide and armrest. This resulted in lacerations to the mouth and, in some cases, loosening or loss of teeth. Approximately 11,344 units of the Avanti stroller, which sold for around $99, were distributed between January 1, 1986 and December 15, 1987.

Peg Perego will provide a free repair kit that closes the gap where children's chins have been caught, and the repair will not interfere with the stroller's reversible handle feature. Only strollers with wire guides and the name "Avanti" on the front bumper are affected. According to the record, consumers should call Peg Perego toll-free at 1-800-824-4000 to obtain the repair kit and installation instructions, or write to Peg Perego U.S.A., Inc., 3625 Independence Drive, Fort Wayne, Indiana.
