What happened

North American Systems, Inc. has voluntarily recalled the CMX-1000 12-cup 4-button Digital Clock model Mr. Coffee coffeemaker due to a potential fire hazard. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is aware of twenty complaints involving the product failing, though no injuries have been reported. The problem occurs while the coffeemaker is plugged in and set to any of the three control positions (on, off, or automatic), and could result in overheating, smoking, or ignition. Only machines manufactured between September 21, 1981 and April 1982 are affected, and over 300,000 machines were originally manufactured.

Affected consumers should check their coffeemakers for a date code on the bottom metal plate with 3-digit numbers starting at 38-1 and ending at 21-2, where the first two digits represent the week of the year and the third digit represents the year. If the machine has this date code, consumers should unplug it immediately and stop using it. According to the recall notice, consumers with affected units should contact Sunbeam Products, Inc. at (800) 672-6333 for assistance, or call the CPSC's toll-free hotline at 800-638-CPSC for more information.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Originally issued June 22, 1983, Revised January 14, 2003 Release # 83-037 CPSC And North American Systems, Inc., Announces Voluntary Mr. Coffee Recall WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Consumer Product Safety Commission has joined with North American Systems, Inc., in a voluntary recall of the CMX-1000 l2-cup 4-button Digital Clock model of the Mr. Coffee coffeemaker because of a potential fire hazard. CPSC and the firm are aware of twenty complaints where the product has failed although no injuries have been reputed. There were over 300,000 machines manufactured of which 147,000 have already been modified. The problem occurs while the coffeemaker is plugged in and set to any of the three control positions (on, off, automatic). Failure could result in overheating, smoking, or ignition of the coffeemaker. Only machines manufactured between September 21, 1981 and April, 1982, are involved. No other Mr. Coffee units and models manufactured by NAS are affected or involved. The CMX-1000 12-cup 4-button Digital Clock units subject to the NAS modification program are date-stamped on the bottom metal plate with 3 digit code numbers starting at 38-l and ending at 21-2. The first two digits represent the week of the year and the third digit represents the year. Each unit was sold retail to consumers for approximately $30 to $40. North American Systems, Inc., advises consumers to check their machines for the above listed date code numbers and to unplug and discontinue use of their machine at once if its date code number falls into this range. NAS advises consumers to disregard this notice if their machine has been modified as a result of previous contact with the company or an authorized service center. If a unit is subject to this recall, consumers should contact Sunbeam Products, Inc. at (800) 672-6333 for assistance (Mr. Coffee is no longer owned by North American Systems, Inc., but Sunbeam Products, Inc. has now taken over in responding to questions about this recall).
