Wood and Hardboard Play Gym
Check against the official notice below — it lists the full affected range.
American Toy & Furniture Company and Sears announced a voluntary repair program for approximately 30,000 children's play gyms sold nationwide through Sears catalogs between 1976 and July 1980 under the name "Wood and Hardboard Play Gym." The product, priced at about $30, consisted of a hollow fiberboard and wood box approximately 30 inches high with a two-step wooden ladder on one side and a slide on the other. While no incidents or injuries were reported involving this specific gym, the recall was initiated as a precaution after three suffocation incidents from head or neck entrapment were reported with a similar play gym made by a different manufacturer.
The hazard identified relates to potential entrapment between the ladder steps. Consumers owning affected gyms should discontinue use of the ladder, and play gyms purchased after July 1980 are not affected as they incorporated a newly designed ladder. The source states the firm is out of business and instructs consumers to discard or destroy these products. For further information, consumers may contact the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's toll-free hotline at 800-638-CPSC.
