Storage Of Black & Decker Lawn Mowers Warning
Owners of more than 18,000 Black & Decker model 8055 cordless battery-powered lawn mowers are being warned of a potential fire hazard in the mower's battery during storage. The orange and white mowers with two blades producing a 19-inch cut were manufactured in 1976 and sold nationwide between January 1976 and August 1980. Black & Decker has received eight complaints of batteries catching fire while mowers were stored in garages or storage areas, though no injuries or deaths have been reported and no fires have occurred during actual use.
While Black & Decker conducts tests to determine the cause of the fires and develops a repair program, affected consumers should remove the fuses from the battery before storing the mower and keep the mower at a safe distance from flammable materials. For instructions on removing battery fuses, safety precautions, and to arrange for future corrections at Black & Decker Service Centers, consumers should call Black & Decker at 800-638-3830 (or 301-820-2406 collect for Maryland residents).
