Cotton City Industries, Inc. and J.C. Penney Company, Inc. have recalled approximately 16,000 multi-colored and plaid ponchos manufactured between May and November 1976. The ponchos, designed for girls and women, pose a fire hazard because the frayed cotton fringe around the edge of the acrylic garment may ignite if it comes into direct contact with an open flame or high heat source. The garments were sold primarily through J.C. Penney stores, with smaller quantities distributed to Foley's Department Store in Houston, Texas and various small retail stores.
Consumers can identify affected ponchos by the label in the neck area. Those purchased from J.C. Penney are marked JCP8203 with style numbers 3050, 3051, or 3052, while ponchos from other retailers are marked 9815. According to the record, consumers should not wear the garment and may return it to the place of purchase for a cash refund or credit.
