Anthrax Contamination In Imported Yarn
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warned consumers in February 1976 that yarn imported from Pakistan by Tahki Imports, Ltd. and sold nationwide may be contaminated with anthrax spores. The affected yarn contains animal wool or hair materials, including 100% camel hair, goats hair blends, and wool combinations, retailing between $4 and $7 per ball. The yarn is labeled "Tahki Imports, Ltd., imported from Pakistan" and was distributed through many retail outlets over the preceding year.
Anthrax is an acute bacterial disease that can be fatal if untreated and can spread to humans mainly through skin contact, though inhalation is possible in rare cases. According to the record, consumers who own this yarn should seal it or any products made from it in an airtight double plastic bag and call their local or state health department for disposal instructions. The record specifically warns consumers not to attempt to sterilize, incinerate, or throw away the yarn due to contamination risk.
