What happened

K2 Corp. and the CPSC have recalled FLIGHT ALX in-line skates with model numbers S00161 or S00162 that were manufactured before November 20, 1999. The recalled skates come in two styles: women's maroon and silver versions in sizes 4-11, and men's gray and orange versions in sizes 5-14. You can identify the model number on the skate's tongue and the manufacturing date on the heel footbed, which appears as an eight-digit number showing year, month, and day.

The plastic brake mount on these skates can crack and fail, which may cause the skater to fall and suffer serious injury. According to the recall notice, consumers should stop using the skates immediately and return them to the store where they were purchased to receive free replacement skates.

The recalled skates are the "FLIGHT ALX" brand with model number S00161 or S00162, manufactured before November 20, 1999. The brand name and model number are on the skate's tongue. The manufacturing date is stamped in the heel of the skate, on the footbed. It is written as the year, month and day (for example, 19991002 is October 2, 1999). Women's skates are maroon and silver in sizes 4 through 11. Men's skates are gray and orange in sizes 5 through 14.
