Sony Electronics Inc. and the CPSC are recalling certain VAIO notebook computers that pose a mild electric shock hazard when connected to a phone line and a phone rings. The recall affects Sony VAIO models PCG-FRV25 and PCG-FRV27 that were sold between June and July 2003. These affected computers will have slow modem speeds, generally below 24K, when using the notebook's AC adapter.
According to the recall notice, consumers who own affected VAIO notebooks should immediately disconnect their modem from the phone line and contact Sony to arrange for a free repair. Sony will extend the current limited warranty for repaired products to 2 years from the date of original purchase. Consumers unsure whether their modem speed indicates they have a recalled model can check their modem speed at www.sony.com/pcsupport.
